Career Path

For individuals with the ambition and drive to succeed, there are several paths a promotion can create. In addition to Fire Suppression, other paths include opportunities in the Prevention Division and the Training Division. See the table below for a quick look at career opportunities with our department.

Firefighter:  Within the first year of employment, firefighters must achieve their National Professional Qualifications Certification as Firefighter I and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. In the year that follows, individuals must achieve relief driver status. In addition to learning fire ground hydraulics, pump theory and pumping apparatus operations, firefighters must pass a street and map test

Sergeant:  36 Months of continuous service, Driver/Operator certified, Completion of Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services Fire Officer I Course and be a state certified EMT or Paramedic.

Lieutenant:  Served in the position of Sergeant for 12 months, Completion of CCFES Fire Officer I Course and be a state certified EMT or Paramedic.

Captain:  Served in the position of Lieutenant for 12 months, Completion of CCFES Fire Officer II Course and be a state certified EMT or Paramedic.

Battalion Chief: Served in the position of Captain for 12 months.

Deputy Chief: Served in the position of Captain or Battalion Chief for 12 months.
